Medical Sisters

The Medical Sisters of St.Francis of Assisi was founded on July 2nd 1844 in Münster/Germany. It was at the context of socio-political turbulence and outbreak of the religious orders, Fr.Christopher Bernsmeyer OFM was inspired to found our congregation. Moved by compassion Fr.Christopher visited the sick in their homes and cared for the abandoned children in the surrounding villages of Münster. His inspiring life drew many likeminded women who assisted him in his works of mercy. We live this legacy of holistic healing through Healthcare, Education and Socio-pastoral services in the continents of Europe, U.S.A, Asia and Africa.

The history of the Medical Sisters’ presence in India is pioneered by two German sisters since 1973. As Franciscan Sisters we are committed to the unfinished mission of Jesus. We infiltrate into our society as teachers, nurses, doctors, lawyers, catechists, pastoral workers and social activists. We are committed to bring Christ’s healing presence to the poor, dalits and the marginalized in urban and rural areas. We serve in schools, kindergartens, hostels, boarding homes, back to school programmes and non-formal study centres. We aspire to a new awareness of how our Gospel spirit influences our surroundings.
